Fort Wayne, IN: Courageous Healing is a grantee of the Indianapolis Colts Foundation Kicking the Stigma Grant program. The Kicking The Stigma Action Grant program offers Indiana-based organizations the opportunity to request necessary funding for projects and programs focusing on the education, support, and advocacy of mental health and mental illness. To date, the Kicking the Stigma Action Fund has distributed more than $4.1 million in funding. The grant funds will support Courageous Healing's clinical program, supportive services, and overall mission to make culturally centered, trauma-informed mental health services accessible to everyone.

Courageous Healing prides itself on being rooted in four main pillars. These are:

  • Culturally centered care: People seek therapy providers with whom they can connect and feel understood - finding them should be a manageable task. Courageous Healing created a dedicated space where clients can receive mental health and life support from staff with similar and shared life experiences, particularly facing racism, discrimination, and inequities. Their team is culturally responsive from diverse disciplines and backgrounds, which allows them to address the complexities of their clients' lives in an honest and affirming way.

  • Trauma-informed practitioners: Traumatic events can have lasting, compounding effects and, when untreated, be passed on to subsequent generations. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color share traumatic experiences and histories unique to their underserved groups. The key to delivering trauma-informed care at Courageous Healing lies in realizing the impact of trauma and the potential for recovery, recognizing the symptoms of trauma, responding according to the trauma-informed model, and striving to provide an experience that does not contribute to retraumatization. The organization comes alongside its clients as partners rather than authorities in their healing journeys.

  • Accessibility: Upholding health equity is essential to Courageous Healing. Its role in contributing to the community being as healthy as possible is to provide therapy on a sliding fee scale for clients who are uninsured, underinsured, and who demonstrate financial need. The organization also offers clients the option of engaging in teletherapy or a combination of both virtual and in-person sessions when transportation and childcare are barriers to receiving the care they need.

  • Safe spaces: Humans have an intrinsic need for safety wired into our minds and bodies. We feel safe when we trust that we are seen, and our feelings are valid, respected, and cared for. Understanding that layout and visual cues play a subconscious role in instilling a sense of safety in us, the spaces at Courageous Healing are designed to convey one message: You are safe, valued, and you belong here. By experiencing safety, our social engagement systems enable us to connect openly and share vulnerably, which makes for a better chance of Healing.

Courageous Healing is an outpatient practice in Fort Wayne, IN, designed to accommodate clients experiencing minor disruption in their ability to function daily. Through talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy, Courageous Healing's therapists help clients identify issues that cause emotional distress to improve their quality of life. Their therapists are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and equipped to help clients navigate stress, anxiety, relationships, parenting, depression, addictions, eating, sleeping, trauma, anger, family conflicts, grief, self-esteem, and more.

Thank you, Indianapolis Colts Foundation, for helping us continue to build on our pillars and supporting our mission to make trauma-informed, culturally centered mental health services accessible to everyone.
